There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where casino betting is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, features 150 slots and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries accompanying the casino, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
